Closing Thoughts

Over the course of this trip I’ve learned a few things. It was an amazing trip but it took a long ass time to plan, people in the west are more courteous and intelligent drivers than the East, and I’ve determined that living in a social media world is a detriment to human life.

I spent hours upon hours mapping out my travels. I created an excel spreadsheet with things like depart time, drive time, hikes, and lodging options. Without ever planning something like this in the past, I vastly underestimated the amount of time it would take to get something that I would feel comfortable with. You have to keep in mind that I was by myself (basically) this entire trip. So, I wanted to make sure that I had everything figured out before I departed.

I’d like to thank my Brother in law Anthony and my Dad for getting me a GPS satellite tracker for the long hikes. I didn’t use it as much as I would have liked to but I think it gave all of us a bit of peace of mind.

Another thing that I noticed was that people west of Missouri all seemed to be better/smarter drivers. I’m not sure if it was because there weren’t as many people on the roads in general. But, I’m glad that people generally stayed in the right lane unless they were passing. That’s really the main thing that I don’t think people realize is an issue. The left lane is for passing people.

Lastly, we live in a digital world now, there’s no getting around it. But, in my opinion it’s a detriment to the human experience. I say this because I noticed that my brain changed after about three days being detached from it. It’s like my brain hit a reset button without the day to day life of social media, emails, video streaming, and news. I mean I literally started thinking and acting differently. My anxiety decreased, I began thinking much more clearly, and my creativity skyrocketed.

We fill our minds with so much constant garbage just so we don’t feel bored. It’s a shame that most people can’t or refuse to see it. I can’t say that I haven’t been sucked back into the lifestyle of binge watching TV show and checking Facebook. But, I can honestly say that when you get “unplugged” for a few days you will see a noticeable difference.

Overall, I’ve been wanting to take a road trip for the past few years now. I’ve always loved being in nature. Growing up as a kid I would have to be dragged away from video games (thanks Chad) to get outside. But, it was always felt good to get outside and smell the fresh air, get dirty, get scraped and bruised, and interacted with other people.

I think people need to take a step back sometimes. Take a step back from your job, take a step back from your phone, take a step back from your TV. I’m not saying that TV, or Social Media, or email are all bad. An it may sound cliche but, there more important things in life. Go change the way your brain thinks. Get out and enjoy nature while you still have the chance.
